Are You Drowning?
Water is essential for living; our cells and organs need water to function. We all know we can’t live without it. Working in fitness I obviously always see people with water bottles. But what about the people who obsessively track their water consumption each and every day? I’ve seen all that too: the rubber band method, the sharpie method, the gallon method; all kinds of ways of tracking how much water people are consuming every day. I’ve also seen people make efforts to drink x number of sips of water as soon as they wake up.
Listen, I want to keep it real. I don’t want to lecture, I don’t want to preach. I simply want to share what I’ve learned through my schooling and what I’ve found to be effective and share that with you.
So back to it. I like the idea of water tracking but I also hate it. I have so many other things that I’d rather focus on than “am I drinking enough water?”. It’s too much. Don’t get me wrong, I love water and that‘s all I drink throughout the day (after I’ve had my coffee and before I drink my beer or tequila)...I always carry a bottle with me because the thought of being caught somewhere thirsty is horrifying!! BUT I much prefer the idea that we should drink when we feel thirsty. There’s such a thing as drinking too much water, which I’ll get into, but there’s also a balance of making sure you get enough. let’s get into it.
I’ve listed some awesome benefits of drinking water, but read more here: https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/290814#benefits
💧 It lubricates the joints reducing joint pain
💧 It forms saliva and mucus, aiding in digestion and belly issues
💧 It boosts skin health and beauty (hello, wrinkles?)
💧 It dissolves minerals and nutrients so they can reach all throughout your body.
💧 It boosts performance during exercise
💧 Weight loss - drink water vs. soda or juice! It also tricks your body into thinking you’re more full than you are.
💧 For you drinkers, it reduces the chance of a hangover...but you already know that.
Water is just GOOD for you and you need it. So drink it. If you’re not drinking any, please start today.
But how do you know if you’re drinking TOO much? And what happens if you do drink too much??
Well, there’s such a thing as over-hydrating where you start depleting your body of the vitamins and minerals it needs to survive. Because you’re drinking too much water, you’re flushing out all the healthy stuff. Your kidneys can’t process all of the extra water and stop doing their job effectively. Super over-hydration can lead to debilitating health problems such as seizures, coma, and even death. But that’s extreme.
What are some ways to tell if you might be drinking too much water??
💧You drink when you’re NOT thirsty
💧Your urine is clear
💧You get up often at night to use the bathroom.
Here’s a fun calculator to see how much water you should drink a day. https://www.hydrationforhealth.com/en/hydration-tools/hydration-calculator/
But please don’t caught up in cups, bottles, and liters. If you have water in the AM, afternoon and PM, you’re on the right track. Replace other drinks throughout the day with water and you’re golden. Cheers!
